The SHAPE Community
SHAPE American High School is located at SHAPE, Belgium; 15 miles (25 km) from the French border, 90 miles (150 km) from the German and Dutch borders, and 70 miles (117 km) from the English Channel. Brussels, Belgium's capital, is only 35 miles (50 km) away. Most of the school's students are dependents of military and civilian personnel assigned to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe).
SHAPE international School, created in 1967, is made up of eleven different sections. SHAPE American High School, one of these, adheres to a typical U.S. curricular and extra curricular program under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Defense Dependents Schools (Arlington, VA), and is accredited by the North Central Association. The unique aspect of this high school is that its enrollment of 500+ students in grades 7-12 reflects 30% international participation. There are 22 nationalities and 20 languages represented at SHAPE American High School. With this make-up, the students are exposed to a multicultural, polyglot environment, which provides then with special challenges and opportunities. SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) is an international NATO military community populated by high achieving and goal oriented leaders in their respective military and civilian contingents. As a result, the students attending SHAPE American High School tend to be culturally knowledgeable, aware of if not fluent in more than one language, socially sophisticated, and extremely successful both academically and athletically.
